As 2017 draws near to a close (I know, where did that year go?!?) at Com Bossa we’re looking ahead to 2018. We already have a very busy calendar and I’m really looking forward to creating many more amazing wedding invitation designs for equally amazing couples.
So without further ado here’s my top five predictions for wedding invitations in 2018.
1. Typography
While 2016 and 2017 were certainly big years for modern calligraphy, 2018 will see a move towards more traditional and modern fonts and typefaces.
Typography and the use of fonts is perhaps the most important element of a wedding invitation design. Even when combined with graphics the choice of font or combination of fonts is what really sets the tone for your wedding invitation. The type should enhance and compliment the graphics and vice versa. Let’s face it no one would love a 1930’s art deco wedding invitation that used bubble writing from the 1970’s.
I’m a self confessed font geek (my wife sighs as I name the fonts used in the credits of a film) and I collect fonts like some people collect stamps.
Fonts have personality, they define the style of your wedding invitation, from big and bold to slim and minimalist the right fonts can really help you achieve that statement of your style and panache.
It’s safe to say that the words on your wedding invitation are the part that everyone will pay close attention to so getting them right is crucial.
A design based on simple and pure type is our number one style tip for the hottest 2018 weddings.
2. Blind Embossing (debossing technically!) 
This stunning technique involves using the same printing plates used to create hot foil stamped and letterpress wedding invitations but this time without any ink or foil hitting the card.
The result is one of pure understated elegance and refined luxury. Blind debossing is best done on the same luxuriously thick cards as used for our letterpress and embossed wedding invitations. I can’t help picking up samples and getting the feels from the 600gsm, 100% cotton beauty that is my go to card stock for making a deep impression.
Talking of impressions, if you want to make a lasting one on your guests blind debossing might just be the key.
3. Botanic Flora and Fauna
A long time ago in a land far, far away brave people ventured into the wilds in search of new and wonderful plant species. They didn’t have cameras or Instagram or anything (the depravation!) so they created wonderfully detailed illustrations of flora and fauna for books both beautiful and scientific.
I’m a little bit in love with these wonderful botanic illustrations. As a source of style for your wedding invitations they provide almost limitless possibilities.
With natures bounty at your disposal all sorts of colour themes are available along with blooms and succulents suitable for spring, summer, autumn and winter weddings.
4. Minimalism
Less is more, less is more, less really is more. It doesn’t become any less true the more you say it.
As a designer my philosophy follows this mantra. As someone far clever than me once said…
‘A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.’
(Actually an amended version of ...perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away… written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in 1939. Every day is a school day.)
In a wedding world filled with busy detail and all manner of things perhaps you are crying out for simplicity. If you appreciate the simple lines and functional beauty of a well designed chair, if your living room only has those things in it that are either essential of beautiful, then minimalist design may well be your path to wedding stationery enlightenment.
5. Lined Envelopes (ever had envelope envy?)
Sometimes it’s that small detail, that finishing flourish or certain je ne sais quoi (ooh French!) that really sets your heart racing. When your beautifully crafted wedding invitations land gently through your beloved guests door let’s not forget that the envelope is the first piece they encounter.
So let us not ignore our little paper messenger of love and pending nuptials.
Envelope liners can be designed to compliment or contrast with the style of your wedding invitation. A bold colour or bright pattern can work beautifully with a simple understated invitation.
I produce envelope liners in the studio as I’ve found the ones you can buy ready made to be of varying quality. This in-house approach means you have free reign to select an envelope liner that will finish your wedding invitation suite to the dizzy heights of perfection you so desire.
Always ensure that, if you have gone to the trouble and expense of having your envelopes lined, you don’t use the gummed seal to close them. Instead I always provide small removable stickers to hold the flap down, this ensures your guests don’t tear right through your stunning liner and instead experience the full wonder of folding back the flap to reveal the lovingly crafted interior.
